Pluralism Under Siege
TThe opposition has blocked two key laws that would have allowed President Correa to increase his hold over society and render it more authoritarian. Both featured the conformation of government-controlled councils, one to slap sanctions on media that would not meet government criteria of veracity, the other with authority over universities, both public and private.
Behind these setbacks is the parting of way of government with some of the leftist groups that backed it, groups that now seem to fear such powers may be wielded against them.
If this blockage persists, the Constitution allows the President to dismiss the Assembly and assume legislative powers, while at the same time submitting himself to reelection, together with the delegates...
